A large-scale construction project

A large-scale construction project: apron renewal

After a construction period of 10-months, Terminal A is completely up and running again. From position one to three, 54,000 m² of the apron were modernized.

O-Ton Andreas Hoffmann – Head of flight operations

“The aim of this measure was to remove and replace the 60-year old concrete, since the surface had lots of large cracks.”

Replace the old with the new. Not quite. Many materials were recycled. The old concrete was broken up.

“It‘s right beneath us, serving as the base for the new concrete surface.”

In early May, construction ground to a halt. A World War II bomb was successfully defused by the bomb disposal team.

“We certainly had differing weather conditions. We started out with lots of rain, which meant having to drain several surfaces we wanted to build on. That was quite a task.”

New drainage underneath, refurbished surfaces on top. Due to the aircraft, the apron bears a load of several tons. This called for a particularly strong concrete mix.

“Near the end of the construction project, which we had to extend by about a month, we ran into difficulties because the cold and sometimes rainy weather made it very hard to apply the markings.”

Slowly but surely, the apron markings were applied and the colored lines updated.

“In the future, we’ll be able to handle modern aircraft that are a bit larger, longer and wider and still adhere to prescribed safety distances.”

Everything is in motion here at the airport. The next large-scale project is just around the corner.

O-Ton Andreas Hoffmann – Head of flight operations

“Next year we’ll have another large civil engineering measure, namely to create a connection between two taxiways. Apron renewal measures will continue as well, but the next surfaces to be modernized are ten years younger than the ones we just renewed so we won’t tackle them for another five years.”
