A good nose on the job
Dogs’ noses have some 200 million olfactory cells, which makes them about 40 times as effective as human noses. Customs dogs don’t miss anything. They root out narcotics, tobacco, cash, explosives, weapons and even human beings. Approximately 500 trained guard and tracking dogs are currently in the service of the German customs. They undergo long and intensive training. Not every dog is suitable for customs duty, but Darcy is one of them and she does a really great job.
